About Colonic Irrigation

What is colonic irrigation?

Colonic irrigation, also known as colon hydrotherapy or simply a colonic, is a bowel-cleansing technique. Filtered water at body temperature is allowed to gently flow into the colon to soften and remove impacted faecal matter, which has built up over time.

This build up can be caused by the types of foods we eat in todays society and the way we eat. (Do you chew your food 20-30 times before swallowing?)  It is offered by holistic clinics as an effective means of restoring and maintaining optimum health.

What are the health benefits?

Colonic irrigation aims to restore the colon back to its natural functioning order. The most common reason for having a colonic is constipation and irregular bowel movements.

The treatment can also help to alleviate conditions such as:-

  • Concentration
  • Good sleep
  • Good skin

  • Healthier appetite
  • Strong nails
  • Immune system

When the bowels are working properly, they eliminate food wastes approximately eighteen hours after eating. However, over time the efficiency of the bowel can be reduced due to impacted faecal matter.

This can happen due to poor diet, lack of exercise, stress and an insufficient intake of water. Foods that are heavily processed, preserved, dried or that contain antibiotics, steroids or pesticides can also contribute to an unhealthy colon. Lifestyle habits such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and a diet high in sugar, coffee and animal fats also contribute to a sluggish colon.

A colon that is impacted with faecal matter creates the perfect breeding environment for unhealthy bacteria and causes a build-up of toxins in the body. The body is also less able to absorb nutrients. An impacted colon is also more likely to become irritated, inflamed and is more susceptible to disease.

What happens during a treatment?

Colonic irrigation is an extremely slow and precise process that should only be performed by a certified colon therapist. Its worth checking out the ARCH website to ensure the highest standards are being adhered to as there aren’t any governing bodies for this treatment in Ireland. http://www.colonic-association.org/

Sessions start with a comprehensive consultation and should consist of Heart rate & Blood pressure checks, nutritional & medical history and iridology and tongue analysis. This allows the therapist to get a grasp of how your overall health is.

Its worth mentioning that if you are aware of blood pressure problems the treatment should not go ahead and instead the therapist would advise you to see your GP to get a letter of referral stating that in their opinion you are fit to have Colonic Irrigation.

A small speculum is then inserted into the rectum. Although the sensation is odd, it is not painful. Two tubes are attached to the speculum. These tubes do not enter the bowel. The first tube allows filtered water at body temperature to flow into the colon through the speculum. The water pressure is very low and in most cases is regulated by state of the art, fail safe machinery.

The water flows into the colon gently expanding the colon walls until you have the sensation of needing to have a bowel movement.

At this point the inflow is stopped and colon will naturally begin to contract again, expelling the waste matter through the second tube.

The second tube allows waste to leave the body. The tube often contains a viewing compartment so that all faecal matter can be analysed by the practitioner. By examining the colour and consistency of your faeces, a trained colon therapist can determine:
  • Whether you are chewing your food properly
  • Whether your food is being digested
  • If you are drinking enough water
  • If you have a yeast overgrowth or parasites
  • If you have excessive gas
Practitioners gently massage the abdomen during the treatment to help dislodge any old faeces or wind.

After the treatment, your practitioner will probably advise you to eat nourishing foods that are easy to digest, such as soup or fruit and vegetable juices. Foods containing acidophilus or probiotics may also be recommended.

If your colon is healthy, one treatment a year is sufficient. Some practitioners will recommend a series of six to eight treatments, depending on your diet, lifestyle and health condition.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Common contra indications are :-
  • Excessively high blood pressure
  • Crohn's disease
  • Severe Haemorrhoid
  • Abdominal Hernia
  • Open wounds around rectal area
  • Severe anaemia
  • Poor heart condition
  • Cancer
  • Intestinal Ulcer

Are there any risks?

One of the most dangerous risks associated with the colonic irrigation is perforation of the colon by a nozzle.  However this could only ever happen if you were being treated by an unqualified or inexperienced therapist as the thin membrane of the colon wall doesn’t start for about 4 Inches into the rectal cavity and the speculum is only inserted about an inch.

In some cases, vast quantities of water can stretch the bowels to the extent that they do not function properly but modern equipment prevents excess pressure being applied to the water entering your system.
