What You Should Expect From Your Colonic Therapist & Clinic

Your therapist, as well as being fully trained. Should be smartly dressed in suitable attire and be courteous and respectful at all times.

Deton Dublin, Colonic IrrigationYou should expect a full consultation prior to your first session.

This can vary from clinic to clinic but the basics should really always be there.
  • A good consultation should include.
  • Heart rate and Blood pressure checks
  • Irridology and tongue analysis
  • A general chat about your eating habits and medical history
This should only take place after an exhaustive questionnaire has been filled out to rule out any contra indications.

It's worth noting that therapies should not go ahead if you are in you first 3 months of pregnancy or if there are any irregulariteies found during the blood pressure and heart rate checks. Some therapists may not treat anybody who is preganant no matter what stage of the pregnancy you are in.

Once the consultation is out of the way and it has been established that the treatment can go ahead a rectal exam should be carried out. This is to let the therapist know there are no tears in the anal cavity and also to establish if there are any active piles in the area.

During the treatment your therapist should be explaining to you how you are feeling and what processes are going to take place.

You should also be receiving abdominal massage which is designed to free up any trapped waste matter from the colon wall and also to stimulate colonic muscles back into their normal bodily rhythm.

Once the colonic treatment is over.

  • You should have easy access to a bathroom in order to evacuate any excess water which may not have been expelled.
  • Post treatment your therapist should give you a run down of how the treatment went, how many sessions are required and nutritional advice would be given at this stage too.
  • During the first session the usual practice would be to administer only filtered water into the colonic area. This allows the therapist to assess your colons natural responses.
  • In some cases a colon may be slow to react and in this case in subsequent sessions it may be necessary to add a coffee infusion with the water to stimulate the colon.
  • In other cases the colon can be overactive or spasmotic. In this case it may be necessary to introduce blends of enema herbs which will calm the colon down.
  • It would be an unusual practice for a therapist to administer any infusions without first assessing the colons natural responses to water.
  • In most cases these infusions are included with the course price but some centres do charge extra. Sometimes as much as the session itself.
During the advice at the end of the treatment your therapist should advise you to go on a course of pro biotic tablets to rebuild friendly bacteria which may have been removed during the colonic irrigation process. They can be obtained from any chemist shop or the clinic themselves might supply them at extra cost to the course. In other cases your therapist may suggest an implant of probiotics directly into the colon with the aid of a catheter. Although the oral method is as good some people feel this is a better delivery method for the probiotics as they dont pass through the digestive sytem. There may be a charge for this depending on the clinic.

What You Should Expect in Your Treatment Room.
Colonic IrrigationSome practitioners are using home based clinics, much like a lot of GP's, & Dentists these days. They can lend themselves to treatments such as this. Others have popped up in Beauty Parlours and Gyms as well as dedicated clinics being formed around the country.

Whatever the location it would not be unreasonable to expect the following to be in place in any good clinic.
  • Waiting Facilities. Sensible arrangements should be made so the client may wait in comfort. Appointments should be made to avoid too much overlap or lengthy waiting.
  • A consultation room should be available for taking of the clients case history in privacy. This can double up as the treatment room.
  • Clean and comfortable facilities should be provided for changing and clean gowns or towels should be provided. This can double up if a spacious bathroom is provided.
  • The treatment room itself should have durable, washable floors (no carpet).
  • Walls, ceilings and other surfaces should be easily cleanable.
  • There should be adequate ventilation.
  • Ideally there should be a sink in the room for use of the therapist.
  • The toilet area should be accessible from the treatment room directly and only for the use of the client when treatments are taking place.
  • A waste bin for the disposal of sanitary towels and soiled articles should be provided.
  • It should be visible to you that the toilet facilities are cleaned to an exceptionally high standard. They should have been thoroughly cleaned and sterilised after each treatment.
  • If sterile, disposable equipment is used it should be taken from its sealed bag infront of you so you know it is brand new and sterile.
  • If reusable equipment is used you should be aware of the processes used to sterilise this equipment.
